The RequirementThe Approved Document P (Electrical Safety in Dwellings) states that reasonable provision shall be made in the design and installation of electrical installation in order to protect persons operating, maintaining or altering the installation from fire or injury.
Scope of Part P Part P applies to the electrical installations in buildings or parts of buildings comprising:
- Dwellings houses and flats. Also dwellings and business premises sharing a common metered supply.
- Common access areas, shared amenities, laundries, Gymnasiums etc to communal living.
- Garden lighting, pond supplies garages, outbuildings etc.
ComplianceTo achieve compliance the electrical installation must be designed and installed to afford appropriate protection against mechanical and thermal damage and prevent electric shock and fire hazards to people. A suitable inspection and test should be carried out to verify compliance.
