Emergency Lighting

What is Emergency Lighting?
Emergency lighting is as it suggests, lighting that will be illuminated automatically in an emergency situation when the main power supply fails. The emergency could be anything from power loss to fire which would result in the buildings occupiers being plunged into darkness thus creating panic.
Dependant on the type of building and its uses a system will be determined using British Standard BS 5266: Part 1: 2005. These systems generally fall into 3 categories as identified below;
Non-maintained - The emergency light units only illuminate in the event of a mains failure.
Maintained - The emergency light units are illuminated at all times using the same lamps for both normal and emergency operation.
Sustained - The emergency light units are fitted with two lamps or two sets of lamps. One operates on mains 230V AC supply, the other operates from the battery supply in the event of mains failure. It is basically a non-maintained system with the addition of mains lamps which should be illuminated whenever the premises are occupied.
What should you be doing?
If you have business premises then you will be required to have Emergency Lighting installed in accordance with the BS 5266.
All Emergency Lighting installations require testing in accordance with the BS 5266 which gives the frequency of testing as follows:
Monthly: An operational test for a short period Six Monthly: Test for at least one hour for 3 hour rated systems. Annual: Test for 3 hours continued discharge.
All test records are required to be logged in the on-site log book.
